Sambar Sadam

Sambar Sadam is a popular South Indian rice dish that combines the flavors of sambar, a lentil-based vegetable stew, with rice.

It is a delicious and wholesome one-pot meal that is commonly prepared in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and other regions of South India.

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup toor dal
  • 2 cups mixed vegetables (such as carrots, beans, drumsticks, pumpkin, etc.), chopped
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons sambar powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2-3 dried red chilies
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • Coriander leaves for garnish

Sambar sadam


  1. Wash the rice and dal together, and cook them in a pressure cooker with 4 cups of water. Cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the rice and dal are well cooked and mushy. Set aside.
  2. Heat oil or ghee in a large pan or pot. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Then add cumin seeds, dried red chilies, asafoetida, and curry leaves. Saute for a few seconds.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  4. Add the mixed vegetables and cook for a few minutes until they are slightly tender.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and mushy.
  6. Now, add sambar powder and turmeric powder. Mix well and cook for a minute to let the flavors blend.
  7. Add the cooked rice and dal mixture to the pot with the vegetables. Mix everything gently to combine all the ingredients.
  8. Add salt according to your taste and mix well. You can also adjust the consistency by adding a little water if needed.
  9. Cover the pot and cook on low heat for about 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  10. Once done, garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
  11. Your Sambar Sadam is Ready!
